Axe may fall on half of Oxfordshire's council libraries (UK)

Funding for nearly half of Oxfordshire's council-run libraries and many of its youth services could be axed under budget cuts. The proposals would affect 20 of the county council's 43 libraries, and 20 out of 33 youth services. The Conservative-run council said it hoped volunteers would step in to run the services under Prime Minister David Cameron's "Big Society" plans. The council needs to save between £155m and £203m up to 2015. A spokesman could not say how many jobs would go as a result of the library and youth service cuts, adding 1,000 job losses before 2015 across the whole council had already been announced - BBC

The UK National Archives calls for volunteers on Twitter

"Throughout 2010, The UK National Archives has been bringing the historic events of 1940 to life, tweeting them 70 years to the minute that they occurred via twitter.com/ukwarcabinet. Now, we are asking for volunteers from our thousands of online followers to take over the project next year. Each tweet links through to an original document which is available online, allowing people to seek out more detail from the government papers. So far this year, we have tweeted developments from Chamberlain's government, Churchill's dramatic rise to power, the loss of France and the 'miracle' of Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the London Blitz. To encourage greater interaction with our historical documents, followers are now being invited to participate in the running of the feed. From January onwards, participants can research and tweet extracts from the 1941 cabinet papers, sending 'live' updates direct to a worldwide audience on the key developments during that year including: Allied victories in North Africa, the sinking of the Bismarck and the attack on Pearl Harbour. Interested participants can apply via UK War Cabinet twitter feed. If you want to get involved, send a tweet from your twitter account to tell us you are interested to @ukwarcabinet"

Wellcome Library Item of the Month, November 2010: A Victorian Paper Trail

Wellcome Library Item of the Month, November 2010: A Victorian Paper Trail"Among books, journal articles, pamphlets and bound volumes of patents about Victorian toilets (flushing or non-flushing), systems of varying complexity for the disposal (and recycling) of human sewage and many items about personal and household hygiene; we also have in the Wellcome Library's Ephemera Collection what must be fairly scarce examples of late 19th century toilet paper. Our main example comes from the 1870s, when one popular product was the Diamond Mills Paper Company's 'Bromo Paper' which came in packs of about 500 individual sheets inside a solid card box (21 x 15 x 3 cm.), open at the top so that single sheets could be pulled out as required. Every sheet had a distinguishing watermark of 'Bromo' so that counterfeit versions could be easily spotted (the packaging states this was a problem in India). This toilet tissue had been awarded the highest prize at the Paris Exposition in 1878 and every pack proudly bore reproductions of both sides of the medal to prove it. The Wellcome Library holds one such pack, now catalogued as EPH471A"

AddressingHistory is asking history enthusiasts to explore their ancestors and local historical connections by finding and placing historical Scottish Post Office Directory listings on the map. Based at EDINA, University of Edinburgh, the AddressingHistory website combines the listings from the Directories, historical forerunners of Yellow Pages, with maps from the same years. The site, which is free to use, allows users to search for historical people, places and professions and presents results both on a map and as an editable listing that links to the full digitised Directory page. You can use the AddressingHistory API to search AddressingHistory's database of Post Office Directories

Protesters say George Bush Library should be a pile of rubble (USA)

Protesters say George Bush Library should be a pile of rubble (USA)"Several thousand people lined up to see George Bush, Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice shovel dirt into a hole at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the site slated to become the George Bush Presidential Center housing a museum, library and archives. Over 100 peace activists showed up to protest, including New York City artist Laurie Arbiter, who helped organize a March of the Dead and carried a sign asking 'Does America Have a Conscience?' 'Rather than build a library, we should leave the broken ground and just fill it with a big pile of rubble,' said Arbiter. 'That would truly represent the catastrophic results of the Bush Administration.'"

Largest-ever cash gift of $100 million left to Huntington Library (USA)

Largest-ever cash gift of $100 million left to Huntington Library"A $100 million gift from the estate of Huntington Library doyenne Frances Lasker Brody - the largest cash gift in the institution's history - was announced Tuesday by President Steven S. Koblick. It feels "a lot like winning the lottery," Koblick said of the bequest, which could yield more than the announced amount. But the money won't be used to buy the equivalent of "a new house, a second car, a third home," he said. "The Huntington wants to be very careful not to overcommit these funds," Koblick said. "We want to put it into safe investments that will augment our lifestyle over time ... This is really going to be used strategically to stretch the financial basis of the institution." None of the money will be used for new buildings, Koblick said. As Brody wanted, her gift will focus on funding the Huntington's botanical gardens, allowing operational funds to go instead to such priorities as staff salaries, Koblick said"

Robert Trent Jones' legacy comes to Cornell University Library

"The extensive archive of Robert Trent Jones, arguably the world's most famous golf course architect, has found a home at Cornell University Library. "No one has altered the landscape of golf - literally altered it - like the Jones family," said Jones biographer James Hansen. "Cornell University gave Jones the education he needed to become a golf course designer, and he loved Cornell for the rest of his life. There was never any question but that Jones wanted Cornell to be the one place above all where his legacy would be remembered and nourished." The archive covers the entire span of Jones' 70-year career, including thousands of hand-drawn plans, sketches and blueprints, as well as artifacts and personal correspondence from some of golf's most famous figures like Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead. The collection is a gift from Jones' two sons, Robert Trent Jr. and Rees, who are also accomplished golf course architects"

New title from Bodleian Library Publishing. An Englishwoman in California: The Letters of Catherine Hubback 1871-1876

New title from Bodleian Library Publishing. An Englishwoman in California: The Letters of Catherine Hubback 1871-1876"The Bodleian Library has released a cache of previously unpublished letters by a niece of Jane Austen: An Englishwoman in California: The Letters of Catherine Hubback 1871-1876. Catherine Hubback, herself a novelist, was fifty-two years old when she left England for America. Travelling on the Transcontinental Railroad in 1871, she settled in Oakland, on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. There, where she lived with her son Edward, who commuted by ferryboat to a wheat brokerage in the city, she began a faithful correspondence with her eldest son John and his wife Mary in Liverpool. Her extraordinary letters offer an intimate and unguarded view of an eventful life in the 1870s and give an intelligent and coherent account of the San Francisco area at a time of rapid growth and financial unrest...."

130 libraries in the capital face axe in spending cuts (UK)

"A third of London's public libraries are at risk of closure because of spending cuts, an Evening Standard investigation has found. It means hundreds of thousands of regular borrowers are likely to see their local branch shut - restricting access to the "civilising" impact of literature, as well as learning facilities and free use of the internet. Critics condemned the cuts to a service that was once the envy of the world, and is still the main source of books for children and the elderly"
