"Results from the 2008 edition of the ALA-APA Salary Survey: Librarian - Public and Academic are available in two ways - immediately for subscribers to the ALA-APA Library Salary Database and in print from the American Library Association online store. Analysis of data from more than 1,010 public and academic libraries showed the mean salary for librarians with ALA-accredited Master's Degrees reported increased 2 percent from 2007, up $1,151 to $57,809. SEC announces successor to EDGAR database

"Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox has unveiled the successor to the agency's 1980s-era EDGAR database, which will give investors far faster and easier access to key financial information about public companies and mutual funds. The new system is called IDEA, short for Interactive Data Electronic Applications. The Open Access Documentary Project

"Intelligent Television and BioMed Central are co-producing a set of videos celebrating the benefits of open access to scientific and medical research. In 2007 the Open Society Institute awarded a grant to support the Project. The Open Access Documentary Project will facilitate the ongoing work of BioMed Central and Intelligent Television in promoting open access to science and medicine in fields as diverse as malaria research and particle physics. The producers are now assembling an international editorial board and contacting institutions that hold archival and production resources that will be vital to the Project. Principal production has begun in London, New York, and at CERN in Geneva, featuring video interviews with activists, publishers, and consumers of scientific and medical information in the developed and developing world—Science Commons Executive Director John Wilbanks and SPARC Executive Director Heather Joseph included, and with other stakeholders in open access including foundations, government agencies, and the media"

"Wiley-Blackwell has announced a new agreement with CambridgeSoft Corporation by which CambridgeSoft will offer structure- and substructure-searchable versions of Wiley's organic chemistry content to their customers under the title of Wiley Organic Essentials. Under this agreement, CambridgeSoft will provide Wiley-Blackwell's reaction databases and online reference works to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and chemical industries and to higher education and academic researchers worldwide. CambridgeSoft will begin offering Wiley Organic Essentials to its users and customers with immediate effect"

The OLE Project

"With support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Open Library Environment (OLE) Project will convene the academic library community in the design of an Open Library Management System built on Service Oriented Architecture. The project leaders are a multi-national group of libraries dedicated to thinking beyond the current model of an Integrated Library System and to designing a new system that is flexible, customizable and able to meet the changing and complex needs of modern, dynamic academic libraries. The end product will be a design document to inform open source library system development efforts, to guide future library system implementations, and to influence current Integrated Library System vendor products"

The winners of the 2008 RITA and Golden Heart awards have been announced. RITA awards are presented annually to the best published romance novels of the year. The award itself is a golden statuette named after RWA's first president, Rita Clay Estrada, and has become the symbol for the best in published romance fiction

Oxford Journals now deposits NIH-funded articles into PubMed Central

"Oxford Journals has announced that they will deposit into PubMed Central any articles published in any of their biomedical journals which are identified by the authors as being funded by the National Institutes of Health. This development helps authors to comply with the public access policies of the NIH"

GBP265,000 research grant awarded to the British Library

The British Library has been awarded GBP265,000 by the Arts and Humanities Research Council to fund a major research project into the Library's collection of medieval and Renaissance Royal illuminated manuscripts. The project, a collaboration with The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, will culminate in a major exhibition at the British Library in 2011-2012

Mackintosh Italian Job

"A little known sketchbook used by the world famous Glasgow architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh on a tour of Italy has now been opened up for use online. The sketchbook, which is today held in the Glasgow School of Art archive, was taken by Charles Rennie Mackintosh on his tour of Italy, France and Belgium in 1891 as the recipient of the Alexander Thomson Travelling Studentship. It provides a unique insight into the architect's formative years and shows Mackintosh as a young architect with a mind of his own. Mackintosh ignored the strict stipulations of the grant body which made his trip possible, and instead pursued his desire to learn more about Renaissance architecture"
