Career Development Group National Conference: Engaging Communities

"Information professionals instinctively want to reach people, to learn about and provide for their needs, to connect with those who don't yet use our services but could potentially benefit from them. The Career Development Group is holding a national cross-sectoral conference on 30th April 2007 on the theme of "engaging communities". The morning session offers a variety of presentations: Zoinul Abidin shares his experiences with developing the Whitechapel Idea Store; Brian Kelly (UKOLN) considers how Web 2.0 developments can help us to engage and build communities virtually; Cath Morgan from the University of Sussex offers an academic perspective; Helen Carpenter from the London Libraries Development Agency discusses engaging refugees and asylum seekers through the "Welcome to Your Library" project. Parallel afternoon sessions will explore further initiatives: speakers include Lynda Martin (Cambridgeshire Libraries) on partnerships with health, and Sue Wilkinson (HMP Birmingham) on engaging the prison community. Where better to explore this theme than in the conference rooms of the Jubilee Library, Brighton - an inspiring and innovative library building, just 2 years old, which has become a focal point for its local community. We look forward to welcoming you - whichever community you serve. This conference runs from 10.00 till 3.30 and represents excellent value for money at 50 pounds + VAT (CDG members) or 60 pounds + VAT (other delegates). Refreshments and buffet lunch included. Bookings/info: Amanda Quick, a.quick@abertay.ac.uk, 01382 308858"
