Australians are being asked to contribute photographs to an online archive to help build the most comprehensive publicly accessible bank of digital images of urban and rural Australia. The archive will involve Flickr, which is a photograph sharing website owned by Yahoo, and PictureAustralia, a bank of more than a million images set up and managed by the National Library of Australia

BCALA announces 2006 literary award winners

The Black Caucus of the American Library Association has announced the winners of the 2006 BCALA Literary Awards during the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio. The awards recognize excellence in adult fiction and nonfiction by African American authors published in 2005, including the work of a first novelist, and a citation for Outstanding Contribution to Publishing. The recipients will receive the awards during the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans

LSE Retrospective Catalogue Conversion

The Library of the London School of Economics and Political Science has completed a Retrospective Catalogue Conversion project to convert all records for items listed in the Library's older card catalogues, making it one of the first major UK research libraries to have all its holdings catalogued online. Completion of this major project means that records for all Library items can be accessed by researchers working anywhere in the world. Some 305,000 items were converted in this final phase, completing records for all stock acquired by the Library from its foundation in 1896 until the early 1980s, when the computerised catalogue began

The Wheatley Medal 2006

The Wheatley Medal 2006 will be awarded for an outstanding printed index published in the UK between 1 January 2005 and 31 March 2006. Special Cuts launching to monitor online media

Specialist media monitoring and press cutting agency, Special Cuts Ltd, is launching a new service to monitor online media. The online service will search the "hidden web" for news articles from e-publications in the academic, government, information management and library sectors, and is designed to complement free news engines. The new offering will cover publications such as info@UK, Knowledgespeak, Legal Technology Insider, Serials e-news, and VIP Eye, which are not indexed by free "news crawlers"

CLOCKSS - Controlled Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe

CLOCKSS is a collaborative initiative by a group of organizations drawn from publishers, libraries and learned societies. This two-year project will test the LOCKSS technology and social model to support a 'large dark archive' that is both fail-safe and has an acceptable process for providing continuing access for orphaned materials. CLOCKSS is a Controlled use of LOCKSS for the purpose of ensuring the promise of long term access to published scholarly content in digital format. It provides additional functionality to that of the use of the LOCKSS system ('Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe') which is widely known in the scholarly communications world as a technology for ensuring the integrity of digital content, and is used as part of preservation strategies for electronic journals to which libraries subscribe

Osama 'plug' boosts book's sales

Osama Bin Laden has seemingly propelled a book by an obscure historian into the US bestseller list, by endorsing it in an audio message aired on Thursday. Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower had reached number 21 on the Amazon list by Sunday, leaping from below the 200,000 mark. Author William Blum, 72, said he had no regrets about the endorsement. The 320-page book is highly critical of US foreign policy, and says the War on Terror is doomed to failure - BBC

The Harvard University Library has received a grant of $600,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the development of a registry of authoritative information about digital formats. Detailed information about the format of digital resources is fundamental to their preservation. Readex announces two new series of digitized Early American Newspapers

Readex has announced that it will begin publishing Early American Newspapers, Series II, 1758-1900 and Series III, 1829-1922 in March 2006. Complementing Early American Newspapers, Series I, 1690-1876, these new series offer fully searchable digital facsimiles of more than 350 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century newspapers, totaling nearly three million pages. These and all Archive of Americana collections are published in cooperation with the American Antiquarian Society (AAS)

H.W. Wilson has announced the debut of color page images on WilsonWeb full text periodicals databases. Infotrieve has announced that it has converted ArticleFinder, its online scientific, technical, and medical (STM) database with more than 26 million citations and eight million abstracts from over 54,000 journals, to a free access model.
